Black and white pictures of a newborn in their parents’ arms always look really beautiful they isolate the babe and give some perspective to the their size and delicate features.
During a trip to Costa Rica last year, I was drawn to this majestic rock on a point near Playa Conchal. After the sun had risen, this jagged rock jutting out from the ocean looked absolutely majestic against the back drop of a clear blue sky. But the harsh sunlight created an extreme dynamic range of exposure, the perfect fit for some black and white pictures.
Colour is great, but nothing beats a minimalistic black and white newborn baby portrait. No props, just the baby with a jet black background. And though not a prerequisite, a little knowledge of science is useful.
There’s a tree in this corn field that I would drive by daily. It sits up on a slight hill and from my vantage point it looks like there is nothing else behind it.
