Kelly—2014 Miss Canada Petite Finalist

It’s not often that you can say you were in the presence of a true beauty queen, but that’s exactly what happened, when Kelly, who had recently been named a 2014 national finalist for Miss Canada Petite, strolled into the portrait studio.

Kelly needed some professional portraits for the competition and I was looking forward to taking them.

But I was also curious. I wanted to know why someone would want to be judged on their appearance. Everyone knows, beauty is fleeting and only skin deep, true beauty lies within. Beauty is also such a subjective thing which differs from person to person, in the end does it really matter what other people think?

One look at Kelly and anyone would see that she is a beautiful young women. But there’s more to her than meets the eye. She is currently enrolled at a local university, with a double major in political science and anthropology. So it’s pretty clear she’s intelligent as well. And in the brief time I’ve spent with her, it’s obvious she has a good heart and strong character.

With her entering this competition, she hopes to redefine the perception of beauty to beyond just appearances. In her words, “I am representing not just outer beauty but also inner beauty.”

Beauty pageants are not for everyone. It’s never an easy thing to be judged solely on your looks and open yourself up to criticism. So why would anyone put themselves through something like that?

But Kelly sees it as more than that. She sees it as a once in a life time opportunity, a life experience that will only make her stronger and more confident.

“No matter what size, height, or age, with confidence every girl will feel beautiful in their own skin,” says Kelly. “You are being looked at not only feeling comfortable walking down a run way in your bikini, but also having confidence speaking to the judges, making public appearances and posing in front of a crowd of people.”

Kelly is also hoping to be an inspiration to young girls to follow their dreams.

“I want to empower young girls like me to chase after their dreams. As someone who has no pageant experience or modelling experience, going into a big competition like this really allows me to be a great example for a lot of girls out there that if you put your mind to something you can achieve anything.”

Now I’m not completely sold on the value of a beauty pageant, but if someone with inner and outer beauty can be a positive influence to others and build confidence along the way, I’m all for it.

If you know Kelly, you might already know you’re in the presence of a true beauty inside and out and in the hearts of those, she’s already a winner.
