Johnfrank and Kimberly took their beautiful new baby girl to the studio in Markham for some (almost) newborn baby pictures and portraits. At birth, Emilia was a scant 5lbs 13 oz. She had nearly doubled her weight in the four weeks since, but was still so tiny, still so delicate, still so newborn.

Kim came prepared to the photo session with some props, blankets, and toys to be included in the pictures. With it being late November and the holiday season in full force, we started the session with some Christmas pictures. Since Emilia had long since passed the ideal age for newborn pictures-less than 10 days old, when they sleep most of the time-this Christmas picture ended up being one of the few in which we captured her sleeping, I guess the season agrees with her.

Emilia was a trooper. Despite being awake most of the time, she endured the near two hour session with patience and class. While being posed in different positions, she was quick to let us know if she didn’t like what we were doing, be it by holding her arms rigid to prevent them being moved (for a month old baby, she was surprisingly strong and equally determined) or by voicing her displeasure with a little cry. But with the tender touch of her mother and her father’s soothing words in Italian, she settled quickly.

During the session she was mesmerized by the studio lights, staring at them as if in a trance.

Other times, she was a natural in front of the camera, seemingly posing for picture after picture.

Sometimes, Emilia was most comfortable just being held.

The new parents were all too ready to give their new baby a smooch. And who could blame them, there’s something about a new baby that makes one pucker. There were times when I was tempted to do the same, but thought better of it.

Taking pictures of a newborn baby always makes me both remember the delicateness and innocence of a newborn and recall the joy and excitement of the life changing event of being a parent for the first time. It was great meeting such a beautiful baby girl and her loving parents.

You never know what lies in store for sweet little Emilia, but one thing is for sure, with parents like hers, she will be loved.
